Map Showing Extent of Kurdish Populated Areas of the Middle East

This map shows those areas of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey inhabited by Kurds. Kurds represent an ethnic minority in all four of these Middle Eastern states. Since 2003, Kurds have administered a semi-autonomous region in Iraq. In Turkey, where a separatist movement has existed since the 1970s, their political situation is more tenuous. Even so, Kurds often perform an important interstate function in this area where connections between Kurds living in different states represents an important cultural and commercial link.
