Runners before the Shah’s Carriage in Teheran, Persia
Iran has been ruled by an absolute monarch for most of its history. Shah Ismail I consolidated this system at the turn of the sixteenth century, one that was not significantly disturbed until the constitutional movement in 1905. Its stability, which lasted until the Iranian Revolution of 1979, has been a significant factor in what remains a strong sense of national identity and difference from fellow Muslims in the Arab and Turkic world.
