Relief Showing the Assyrian King Sargon II in His Chariot
The Assyrian king Sargon II, identified by a crown, is riding through a forest in his chariot. An attendant holds a parasol to shield him from the sun. Barefoot soldiers walk in front of the king, and lead him to the shore of a lake, where there is a shrine (not pictured).
Representations of kings are always ideological statements. It may be that this scene shows the reverence of the king to the gods.
