This is a photograph of Huda Sha‘arawi and Safia Zaghlul, major figures in the Egyptian women’s and national movements of the twentieth century. Both women were involved in the Egyptian Wafd party, which actively sought independence for Egypt from Britain. Safia Zaghlul’s husband Saad Zaghlul was the leader of the Wafd party.
