Growth of the Ottoman Empire
This map shows the expansion of Ottoman Empire expanded out from Anatolia into Southeastern Europe, Iraq, Syria, the Hijāz, Egypt, and North Africa over the course of the sixteenth-century. In terms of rulership and justice, the Ottoman state was both traditional and innovative, integrating elements of both the Sunnī-Jamā‘ī Imamate and the sacral sultanate into its program of governance. The Ottoman Empire was the last large, multi-ethnic land empire of the Middle East; its disintegration in the early twentieth-century gave way to the era of modern nation-states and the challenges of nation-state politics.
