Departure of Odoric of Pordenone
Franciscan Friar Odoric traveled in the East in about 1316-1329 CE, visiting Persepolis and Baghdad on his way to China, and living in China for three years. Like Marco Polo’s earlier writings, Odoric’s widely read accounts of his travels became an important source of knowledge that shaped Western ideas, but also Western fantasies, about the East.
